Shopping

Saline County offers shoppers friendly convenience with a good mix of eclectic home-grown businesses and nationally franchised establishments.

Route 13 enters Harrisburg from the west and takes you downtown and around the square. Many of the historic buildings around the Harrisburg square now house professional services, with offices of lawyers, physicians and investment counselors. Recently a main street bank built a new facility on the square with architecture in keeping with the other historical buildings, and another bank completely remodeled its seven-story building. The downtown area also offers a modern four-screen cinema.

The northern area of Harrisburg, along Route 45, contains the newest retail centers. Arrowhead Point Shopping Center is anchored by a large discount department store chain and an impressive food store. In addition, there are 10 smaller stores and shops. Shawnee Square Shopping Center, adjacent to Arrowhead Point, also has a large national food chain and several smaller retail outlets. Both centers contain restaurants.

Parker Plaza, at the south end of Highway 45, is anchored by a large food store and several shops and offices, including an antique mall. The area around these shopping centers contains free-standing stores offering everything from building and garden supplies to designer jewelry and boutique gift items.

Drive seven miles north of Harrisburg on a new four-lane highway to Eldorado. This community has participated for the past few years in the national “Main Street” program to revitalize its downtown area and bring local shoppers and tourists back to Main Street. Downtown Eldorado is home to antique shops and art and craft shops with a local flavor. There are a variety of shopping experiences, including quality furniture stores. The citywide revitalization has brought life back to Main Street.

The villages of Carrier Mills, Galatia, Muddy and Stonefort all add their own distinct businesses, many of which have a long history in their communities. The shops in these small towns offer everything from quality home furnishings and work ware to building materials and the staples of life. These neighborhood shop owners know their customers on a first-name basis. If you come in to visit the area, you will leave as a friend.

Fast-food fanatics will find all of the classic favorites in Saline County, including establishments that serve steak, chicken, burgers, pizza, fish ’n’ chips, and specialty sub sandwiches. If you’ve got more than a few minutes to spare, one of Saline County’s full-service, sit-down restaurants will fit your bill. Menus vary widely and include barbecue, Chinese, country cooking, Mexican and Italian, along with classic bar and grille fare.

For a visit that requires an overnight stay, you will find comfort in modern motels like the Comfort Inn and Super 8, which have such amenities as pool/spa and free breakfast. Those seeking a quieter, more tranquil lodging experience can opt to stay at one of Saline County’s two beautiful bed and breakfast establishments, White Lace Inn on Poplar Street in Harrisburg, or the House of Nahum Bed and Breakfast in a rural setting on Sally Holler Lane. Each establishment invites guests to experience a unique atmosphere in which they can relax, unwind and enjoy their time at their own leisurely pace. The House of Nahum, located on a secluded country lane, features four rooms, each with a private bath, and one suite. White Lace Inn consists of two early 1920s mansions and a carriage house, with a total of 14 guest rooms, all with private baths. These facilities are also available for private receptions, parties and special events. Front porches, fireplaces and fine food are just a few of the luxuries that await weary travelers at these peaceful retreats.
